I worked with the Aids Action Committee to produce a series of posters to communicate safe-sex strategies focusing on condom use. When the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority wanted to censor these posters, the ACLU and Aids Action joined to challenge their position. The case eventually went before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. We won the case, and I had the opportunity to hear the MBTA’s lawyer exclaim in court “Your honor, they’re talking about the penis!” Maybe we were. But we were also trying to use a little humor to save some lives. The posters are in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum. https://collection.cooperhewitt.org/people/18041635/
